about

Weary Traveller is the first single taken from Matthew Carter's 2015 EP Patterns.

The song shares a theme running through the whole EP. It's about how we spend our time looking forward into the future, or back into the past, and only very rarely find ourselves in the moment.

Often it's nature that brings us back into the moment. It helps us get out of our own heads.

This song is about a journey, retracing steps you've made before, but somehow not being able to. Things not being the same, as perfect, as you remember them being. It's about accepting that the past is the past. It's about moving on.

The chorus is taken from Hardy's Drummer Hodge - portion of that unknown plain will Hodge forever be, and strange-eyed constellations reign his star eternally (or something like that).

It's trying to communicate that idea that sometimes we find ourselves overwhelmingly in the moment, and so rarely does this happen that it feels significant. Things look different here. It feels like you've been brought here, by design. That this experience, that star, is in some sense, meant for me.

lyrics

Into the forest we go
A weary traveller is on it
Footprints swallowed by the snow
Leave no trace of you upon it

Through the forest there’s a clearing
A sight nobody else has seen
The canopy open green tops
And your breath is lost against the breeze

Strange eyed constellations
Reign down eternally
Yet hear tonight, through bleary eyes I see
That star is meant for me

In the morning as I wake up
A mist lays heavy on the ground
You gather all of your possessions
And disappear with out a sound

But with memory ever stirring
Years later you return
But the trees have disappeared now
in their place a lantern burns

Strange eyed constellations
Reign down eternally
Yet hear tonight, through bleary eyes I see
That star is meant for me
